In most countries of the first world, when you say that some event is at 8:00 pm, everybody is there at 8:00 pm. However, in the rest of the countries, that usually means around 8:30 or 8:45 pm. How can you explain that? Very easy, people has no respect for others people time. They don’t care if you arrive at 8:00 pm and you have to wait more than 30 minutes there just doing nothing. It a cultural problem and it’s no close to an end. I’ve been having this problem for more than 10 years at my job. A meeting is at one specific time, and everybody, including the boss, arrives 20 minutes later. If you want to change the culture, start changing your own, then your family and finally, your company. I believe we can make it.

Believe it or not, bosses hate to give vacations to employees. They believe they are losing money when you are not working and will try to give you all kind of excuses to make your request a pain. If I were the boss, I will always accept all request for vacations or free days because I will assume that the employee really needs them. In addition, I think none will ask for free days before some important launching or pre-schedule event. Sometimes the employee may have forgotten to ask for the free days and just ask for them 3 or 4 days before he/she needs them. Maybe that employee is worried about something and just forgot to ask that in advance. Anyway… If you are a boss and you are reading this… just a accept the request fast and with a “no problem” answer. If you are an employee, I’ll give you some very good advices to avoid problems and get your free days:

Never ask for them via email. Go to your boss’s office and talk gently about your problem and why you need those free days.

Ask for your free days as soon as you know you need them

Always tell the truth if you have to answer why you need those days. Never make stories about your aunt’s illness

If you are in the middle of an important job, ask some of your co-workers to cover you while you are not at the office, before talking to your boss.

Try to understand your company’s HR policy and your country’s law about it. You may have some free days to study by law and you don’t know!

Good luck!
